The story

Cole Sprout’s case study is essential reading for any student trying to juggle more than one dream. Whether you’re balancing elite athletics with academic ambition or simply trying to find a school that fits all sides of who you are, Cole’s journey shows what it looks like to choose with intention. From navigating recruitment to thriving under Stanford’s fast-paced quarter system, he shares what it takes to grow in multiple dimensions—without compromising on what matters most. Cole Sprout always knew his life would be a balancing act. Growing up in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, surrounded by endless trails and sunshine, he felt an early pull toward the outdoors, competition, and learning. When the time came to think about college, the decision centered around where he could thrive. “I knew athletics were important,” Cole said, “but balancing them with academics was non-negotiable.” Cole wanted to grow as a person, an athlete, and a student, all at once. He spoke with dozens of schools. Some had strong running programs, others were academic powerhouses, but few offered both. Throughout the search, Stanford lingered in the back of his mind as a place where he could chase national championships and intellectual challenges side by side.

That mindset helped him eliminate schools that didn’t fully align with his values. When it came down to it, his top choices were Stanford, Washington, and Colorado. Stanford offered something unique: a culture where pushing boundaries is expected, and where being a well-rounded student is fully embraced.

Success at Stanford

When asked what kind of student thrives at Stanford, Cole responded:

"You have to be adaptable. I think that’s really huge. Stanford’s on a quarter system, but really a trimester system. Classes are fast-paced. You have to be on top of everything. Develop a routine that facilitates that success. It’s a give and a take. You have to be willing to change, willing to explore what works for you. And if you’re willing to put yourself out there, then I think most of the time you will be successful. You’ll find your niche."

The quarter system moves quickly, and balancing it with a Division I athletic schedule forces students to develop discipline, flexibility, and structure. While these stressors presented their own challenges, Cole utilized the energy of the Stanford community to elevate his experience.

"There’s a lot of pride in being a Stanford student. Everybody has something incredible they’ve done before coming here. There’s a very competitive spirit, which I really like outside of athletics. I’m a competitive person by nature, and that was one of the things that drew me to Stanford. And it’s been just as true through my four years here."

Yet, what Cole didn’t anticipate was how volatile that journey could feel. Stanford’s abundance of opportunity can be exhilarating but potentially overwhelming. New doors are always opening, which can make it hard to fully commit to one pursuit. Cole found that many students, including himself, often pivot from their original plans, discovering new passions along the way.

"There’s a lot more volatility and pivots than I expected. People come in thinking they want to do one thing, but they end up doing something entirely different. It’s not good or bad, it’s just something I didn’t see coming. And Stanford gives you so much room to figure out what that thing might be."

His experience shows that working hard at Stanford is a given. The real challenge is managing change, juggling priorities, and identifying what’s most important to you.
