How Do You Pick the Right College?
The short answer: talk to students who are already there. They know what the brochure doesn't say. Here's how Scholarly makes that possible.
Choosing a college is one of the biggest decisions you'll make as a teenager, and most of the information you have to go on is curated by the schools themselves. Rankings tell you about prestige. Brochures show you the prettiest buildings. But none of that tells you what it actually feels like to be a student there.
The people who can tell you that are the ones who are living it right now. Students who chose that school, moved in, sat through the classes, joined the clubs, and figured out whether the culture actually matched the pitch. Their experience is the most honest data point you can get.
That's why Scholarly lets you message real students directly. Our Scholars are students at top universities who have been through the admissions process and are ready to answer your questions. Ask them what surprised them about their school, what the social scene is actually like, what they wish they had known before applying, or whether they'd choose the same school again.
And when you want to go deeper, you can read their full application case studies to see the essays, stats, and strategy that got them in. Between the conversations and the case studies, you get a complete picture of what each school values and what it's actually like to go there.
Talk to Students at Your Dream School
Every Scholar on Scholarly is a real student at a top university. Message them to ask about campus life, get essay feedback, or hear what the application process was really like from the inside. Each Scholar sets their own rate, and you only pay if they respond.
What to Ask a Student at Your Dream School
Not sure where to start? Here are the kinds of questions that help you figure out whether a school is actually right for you.
“What surprised you most after you enrolled?”
Every school has things that don't show up on the website. Maybe the dorms are better than expected, or the class sizes are smaller than advertised, or the social scene is completely different from what you pictured. Students who are actually there can tell you what caught them off guard, for better and for worse.
“What do you wish you knew before applying?”
This is one of the most valuable questions you can ask. Students who are on the other side of the process have perspective that no counselor can replicate. They know what mattered, what didn't, and what they would do differently if they had to apply again.
“Would you choose this school again?”
This simple question tells you more than any ranking ever could. If a student says yes without hesitating, that says something. If they pause, the reasons why are worth hearing too. Either way, you get a level of honesty that no admissions office will give you.
“Can you look at my essay?”
Scholars aren't just there to answer questions about campus. Many of them are happy to review your essays, give feedback on your application strategy, or help you figure out how to frame your story for a specific school. They wrote those same essays not long ago, and they know what worked.

Go Deeper with Real Application Case Studies
Talking to students helps you understand what a school is like. But when you want to understand what it takes to get in, case studies are where you find the answers. Each one shows you the complete application of a student who was admitted: their essays, their test scores, their extracurriculars, and an in-depth interview about their strategy.
Between the conversations you have with Scholars and the case studies you read, you get a full picture. What the school is like, what they look for, and how students like you got in. That's the kind of clarity that no ranking or brochure can give you.
